nonstop socks
Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at 9:52AM Yesterday I went to visit Jacob's sister so that she could take a nice mid-day nap while I watched Komari. On my way out of my apartment, I grabbed the hot mama poncho, which has been sitting on my shelf with nothing left to do but weave in the ends. Now that Kuma is officially a hot mama, she could really use it- shorter ponchos make nursing modestly fairly easy- there isn't too much fabric to have to pull up, but she can still be more covered than with a regular shirt on. With Kuma getting some much-needed rest in the next room, and Komari waking up only intermittently to fuss, get changed, and go back to sleep, I finished the poncho at last. The yarn- Debbie Bliss Cotton Angora- is incredibly soft and cozy, and another of those all-year-round-for-Southern-California blends- good over a long-sleeved t-shirt on winter days, and great over a tank top and skirt for summer nights. Because it is mostly cotton, it has fantastic stitch definition. The angora content is only 20%, which I think is perfect. I usually don't like working with angora because the shedding drives me insane, but in this case it only serves to soften the yarn and give a tiny bit of a halo with use- more of a glaze than a halo. I think Kuma looks adorable! I even have enough yarn left to make a matching hat for Komari- I love the idea of a mother/daughter outfit that isn't too cutesy, frilly, and frou-frou.
Sunday night I got home and went on a bit of a sock knitting binge. You know when you tell yourself, oh, just knit until the end of the last motif... no, you can keep going until you get to the heel flap... no wait, the heel flap isn't very big, do that part, too... well, you might as well turn the heel, that's the fun part... oh, why not pick up the stitches for the gusset... might as well work the gusset decreases, too... oh, just straight knitting, this part will go fast... wow, at the tow decreases- why don't you just finish this puppy? That was basically my inner dialogue, starting right after the family dinner, going straight through the car ride home, and ending on my couch. And, as you may have guessed already, the knitting on the Sockapalooza socks are done!
These socks are warm, snuggly, and rather cute, if I do say so myself. I am really glad that I didn't switch yarns after the whole pooling thing with the other colorway, because now I can officially be friends with the Artyarns Supermerino again. That stuff is dreamy. I'm sure it would make a great sweater, and fabulous baby clothes, and I've seen it worked up as a scrumptious scarf, but for now, I just want to make socks out of it. Lots and lots (and lots!) of socks. These still need the Wool Cotton ends woven in, and a nice baby shampoo wash and blocking, and then they will be officially finished objects.
In other knit-along news- I have not forgotten to work on a flower for the February Flowers exchange! I have, however, forgotten to take pictures or blog about it. So, since I have yet to mail my flower (I swear I will! Tomorrow morning- Priority Mail even!) I will be sure to snap a picture to post. I love making flowers- quick, easy, and really fun to wear.
For the rest of this week, the plan is to work on a very specific design at home, taking breaks if I need to (all I'm gonna say about the design is it is intarsia, and sometimes intarsia requires a break) with the 80's mom felted sweater bag fixin's, and- you guessed it- some more socks on the bus. Not out of the Artyarns this time, but a particularly sweet colorway of Koigu KPPPM instead. Another pair of gift sockies. I am putting the plan in bold letters because I really intend to follow it. Really. Boldly. I know that some of you were aghast when I started the whole 6 month yarn fast thing, but you know what? All yarn lust aside, I am actually enjoying it. I didn't intend for it to make me focus a little more on my WIP's, but it has, and there is nothing like finishing a project to stir up the creative juices.
